Oliver Herzog (56) drove a BMW R1200GS from his home town of Walchwil in Switzerland to Cape Town and Johannesburg in South Africa at the beginning of 2016. He chose the western route via Morocco, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea-Conakry, Mali, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Gabon, Republic of Congo, Angola, Namibia and South Africa. He did most of the trip on his own and therefore stayed mainly on different parts of the Trans Afrikan Highways. The closed border between Guinea-Conakry and Côte d'Ivoire and the lack of spare parts for his motorcycle presented him with special challenges. A missing visa for the Democratic Republic of Congo even forced him to bypass the Congo as a crew member on a container ship. Read more
